Water Damage Mercedes ECU ECM

One of the most common problems with Mercedes ecu control units is water damage to the circuit board. The models that seem to have the most problems with water damage are the C240 and the C320. The main problem with these models is that the ecu is located under the hood, below the windshield, on the drivers side. As water drains down the windshield it can easily find its way to the ecu and ruin the circuit board. In most cases, this is how the Mercedes computer gets damaged. Another way water damages the ecu is when the hood is inadvertantly, left open. Water damaged Mercedes computers can not be repaired. The only solution is to replace the ecu.

Eventually the Mercedes Benz, M.E. control unit is submerged in about an inch of water. Once this happens there is no way to successfully repair it because even after the repair, rust will set in and new problems will arise. Water is an engine computers worst enemy and once the Mercedes computer has been exposed to water it will have to be replaced with a remanufactured unit that is ready for programming. Even if we could repair the visible water damage the rust that follows will render the repair useless. Over time there will be more problems that will arise from the water and the rust. A replacement ecu matching the part number is the safest way to make sure the ecm will not fail again. We used to offer a repair service rather than replacement but what happened was within a matter of months the engine computer would fail because the rust would return and destroy circuits and fragile components on the board.

The C240 , E320 and C320 are the most common models that seem to have water related problems. Obviously, this could happen to any Mercedes but we see this most often with the C and E class 2001 to 2005.
